New Residency Applications Gibraltar

New Residency Applications for UK and EEA Nationals Temporarily Suspended in Gibraltar

On the 6th of October 2025, the Government of Gibraltar announced the immediate suspension of new residency applications from UK nationals and citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA). The change, published in the Gazette, follows what officials described as an “unprecedented influx” of applications since June of this year, with numbers tripling compared to the usual annual trend of around 1,000.

The surge in interest is closely linked to the anticipated UK/EU treaty and the potential for a common travel area with the Schengen zone. Coupled with Gibraltar’s existing advantages, which include access to healthcare, education, and a stable financial environment, the jurisdiction has become increasingly attractive for individuals seeking residency.

However, authorities have warned that without careful management, such rapid growth could place a strain on Gibraltar’s limited space and public services.

The Government’s Position

The new regulation temporarily halts the processing of new applications, with exceptions only in cases where Gibraltar’s international obligations, economic interests, or issues of extreme hardship apply. However, applications that were submitted before the 6th of October will not be affected by this ruling.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo noted the importance of balance, stressing that while Gibraltar remains a desirable location, it must safeguard its economy, infrastructure, and quality of life.

Moving Forward

At Abacus, we recognise that Gibraltar’s attractiveness as a place to live, work, and invest is central to its long-term prosperity. We therefore welcome the Government’s commitment to ensuring that applications which contribute to Gibraltar’s economic interests will continue to be considered.

“This temporary pause reflects Gibraltar’s strength and continued global interest. The fundamentals remain unchanged, Gibraltar is a stable, well-regulated, and opportunity-driven jurisdiction. Those who plan strategically today will be best placed to move swiftly when applications reopen.”
